Poems celebrating the creative spirit of Art, Music, Film, Science and Other Realms.
You will notice I refer to my Muse in the masculine; while it is customary to think of The Muses as feminine entities, I believe one must receive one’s Muse in whatever manner it presents itself. I have also given my musical instruments masculine names. (excerpt from Voici Le Muse)
I believe one must daydream a little, or a lot, about what you’d like to do once a Muse arrives. Or one might research a subject through reading, listening to music, watching old films, or looking at works of art . . . It is important to have interesting things to think about while you wait.
And when The Muse does come, drop what you are doing and welcome it in with open arms. Do not accuse it of abandoning you, or berate it for the length of time it has been away. If it wants to speak, listen to what it has to say. It might inspire you in a different direction. And, please, do not use the time to launch into a litany of complaints about what is troubling you. The Muse is not your therapist. The purpose of the visit is to inspire and to create.
So, waste no time once it arrives! Get down to the business at hand. Enjoy the journey and savor the moment from all angles. One word, an unconscious thought, or an almost imperceptible action, can transform into a new creation. And, when it is time for The Muse to leave, graciously allow it to continue on its way. Let The Muse know you appreciate its coming, thank it sincerely for the time it gave you, and then trust that The Muse will return.
