Raindrops

We didn’t notice
The crickets had left

Their song abandoned
Between blades of grass

So intent were we
On our own sonata

Played out
To a final crescendo

And then came
Drops of rain

Making holes
In the heavy air

Falling from towering
Cumulonimbus clouds

Clouds we could smell
But couldn’t see

Dropping their fat raindrops
Atop our heads

And splatting like ripe plums
Upon the pavement

As we said goodnight
