Woodcut, Hans Glaser
Depicting an event at dawn, April 14, 1561
over Nuremberg, Germany
On a cloudless night
With a mysterious quill
Dipped in Midnight’s ink
A message is emblazoned
Across the Firmament
The flashing lights graze
The atramentous page
A flickering display
In the soft-moving vents
Of a gentle Zephyr
The luminous whisper
Above the sleeping rooftops
Under which we’ve emerged
From our amethyst cocoon
Has renewed us in alien bodies
The lambent Crescent overhead
Silently watches the flowing milk
Swirling into glittering spheres
While gossamer fingers gently grasp
The frayed edges of ebony fabric
There we wait, consecrated and anointed
Immersed in star-like projections
Yearning for the Western Passage
For the feathery beams to cast downward
And carry us to the distant Realm
